NUN: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalms 119:105)
Serving YHWH thru Service to Others
The Truth about “Works”
Let us start with the most basic reason of all for why works are needed:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
That is Yahshua himself speaking folks. Are you listening? We should be obedient and do good works, not just because it is expected, but because we love YHWH and want to glorify Him. Yes, I know that a lot of folks say works are not needed; but, as for me and my house we will serve YHWH (Joshua 24:15) - and listen to Him. He says works are very much so needed!
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and, then he shall reward every man according to his works.
We know Yahshua was an example for us. Did he do works?
For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
Yahshua says that his followers will also do works:
Amen, amen, I say to you, he that believes on me, the works that I do he shall do too; and greater than these he shall do - because I go to my Father.
Yahshua also said YHWH will get rid of believers (branches on the vine) that do not follow Yahshua’s example of doing works (do not bear fruit - are unprofitable):
I am the True Vine and my Father is the Vinedresser. Every branch in me not bearing fruit He takes away; and, each one bearing fruit He prunes so that it may bear more fruit.
And cast you the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Will you listen to your preacher over Yahshua? I hope not!
Let us look briefly at some Old Testament verses:
Then hear you in heaven, in the place of your dwelling, and forgive, and do so as to give to every one according to his ways, as you shall see his heart (for you only know the heart of all the children of men).
(1 Kings 8:39)
Also to you, O YHWH, belongs mercy: for You render to every man according to his work.
For you say, Behold, we did not know this. Does not He who weighs the heart consider it? And the One who keeps your soul, does He know? Yes, He repays to a man according to his work.
You can longer say you did not know. Some still seem to think that these verses are obsolete. The Apostle Peter knew better:
And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons, judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear.
(1 Peter 1:17)
So why do so many think works are not relevant? One reason is because they believe once saved always saved. Two wrongs do not make a right. Actually, the fact that works are required also proves that once saved always saved is false. Another reason is because they listen to the false apostle Paul instead of Yahshua. Consider why James, a true disciple of Yahshua, stressed works. He was trying to counter the damage being done by Paul. Paul focused on faith and grace. Yahshua and his true Apostles knew better.
In addition to Peter and James we also have comments on works by John.
Because this is the message that you did hear from the beginning, that we may love one another, not as Cain - of the evil one he was and he did slay his brother, and why did he slay him? Because his works were evil; and, those of his brother righteous.
(1 John 3:11-12)
Note that Peter, John, and James are all writing after Yahshua had been resurected - so much for us being in a “different dispensation”!
Our works, and the quality of them, have been and always will be an important part of being a child of YHWH. Works alone cannot save you; but, as James repeatedly stressed our faith without works is dead:
James 2:17 - Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone.
James 2:20 - But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
James 2:26 - For as the body without the spirit is dead: so faith without works is dead too.
When Yahshua addressed the churches in Revelation (chapters 2 and 3) the very first thing he mentions to each church is that he knows their works. He went on to stress that he will apply the Old Testament concept of reward and punishment that is based on works:
And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that I am he which searches the reins and hearts; and, I will give to every one of you according to your works.
Note that He searches the heart first. Doing works for our own reward is useless. Works must be done to Honor YHWH.
Works are our duty:
So you too, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Take special notice here - even when we do all we are commanded to we are still to consider ourselves as unprofitable - and the unprofitable are to be cast away. Only by the combinations of love, obedience, works on our part, AND Yahshua's sacrifice, AND YHWH's grace and mercy, do we become acceptable servants.
Works are our duty - not our salvation; but, we will be judged by our works:
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before YHWH; and, the books were opened and another book was opened - which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it; and, death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them. And they were judged every man according to their works.
Our works are far more than just “good deeds”. Our “work” includes our love and obedience to YHWH and our love and forgiveness toward others.
Many folks think that Yahshua bought them a reservation in Heaven (he did) and they do not have to do anything. I do not know if this will help but I will try an analogy. Let us imagine that we have two houses reserved for us. One is in Heaven and one is in Hell. Yes, Satan has one waiting for us in Hell too. The difference is that Satan will move you in to your new house - you do not have to do a thing. Yahshua said many are called but few are chosen. Yahshua expects you to do the work to move in yourself - if you do not you lose your reservation and it goes to someone who is willing to do the work. You have been called; but, you must act if you want to be chosen. The house is yours ony if you move yourself in!
Another way of looking at it is that Yahshua has called you as a recruit in the Army of YHWH. Consider this life as being “boot camp”. If you do not do what is expected of you then you will not be chosen to graduate to actually become a soldier.
Always remember one of the last things Yahshua said recorded in the Bible:
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
Thanks for joining me on The Path to Light.
In Brotherly Love,
PS - Yahshua expects us to do “works” (merciful deeds); but, remember that we are to be humble in doing so.
Take care not to do your merciful deeds before men in order to be seen by them. But if not, you have no reward from your Father in Heaven. When you do merciful deeds, do not trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be glorified by men. Amen I say to you they have their reward. But doing merciful deeds, do not let your left know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret; and, your Father seeing in secret Himself will repay you in the open.
